Travis Burns, Ed.D.

Dr. Travis Burns is the current principal of Northumberland High School (NHS) and serves on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) and the Board of Trustees for the Virginia Foundation for Educational Leadership (VFEL). Dr. Burns was recently appointed to The Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure (ABTEL).

Prior to joining Northumberland County Public Schools (NCPS), Dr. Burns spent 14 years with Gloucester County Public Schools (GCPS) as a substitute teacher, social studies teacher, high school assistant principal, and middle school principal. He earned his undergraduate degree in political science with honors from the University of Mary Washington and master’s and doctoral degrees with honors from the College of William & Mary. In 2010, the Gloucester Community Education Board named Dr. Burns a Youth Advocate of the Year. Dr. Burns’ current professional interests are in the areas of family engagement, lateness behavior, organizational citizenship behavior, organizational justice, and organizational dissent.

Dr. Burns is the author and co-author of a number of recent publications. Organizational Dissent with co-author Chuck Wagner was published in NASSP’s Principal Leadership in December of 2013. Organizational Justice: Teachers’ Perceptions of Fairness and Equity are Essential to a Successful Principalship was published in Principal Leadership in April of 2013. Dr. Burns is also co-author with Michael DiPaola of A Study of Organizational Justice, Organizational Citizenship and Student Achievement, published with American Secondary Education (ASE).

Dr. Burns is a 2015 graduate of Virginia Tech’s prestigious Aspiring Superintendents Program affiliated with the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS). He is also a 2015 graduate of the Lead Northern Neck Jack Russell Memorial Leadership Program modeled after Lead Virginia.
